... The work entitled "Crater" is a large installation, one that fills th entire room. It consists of 24 automobile windscreens placed in a row, each held in place using two clamps. They form a circle 29 ½ feet in diameter, the inner space filled with 20 cubic meters of polystyrene up to a height of some 12 - 28 inches. Metal antennae from 10 hidden transistor radios protrude from from this mass. The transistors give off a weak hiss, filtered somewhat by the polystyrene mass. ...
Rappenecker's installation is related directly to the scale and proportions of the gallery, functioning as an added, impressive dimension. Despite a certain formal affinity to Minimal Art, what we can perhaps assume here is an explosion of a sensitive, Romantic painting. ...
