... The automobile as a futuristic symbol of dynamic speed, as a consumer object of erotic desire and of personal liberty - for many years it is these properties that have fascinated Rappenecker. You can smell the rubber of the car tires that are set across the gravel-scape of the Stadtgalerie. Cooling batteries originally intended for use by campers are stacked in one corner and spread around the room. Out of some of the towers of tires a deep heart beat can be heard, accompanied by the rhythmic spark of a flash of light deep in the core of one truck tire. Otherwise, nothing moves. The dynamic forward drive of technological progress seems to have come to a halt. The conserved heart beat is sampled from a CD soundtrack. The flashes of light, triggered by the sound waves of a heart beat, appear on a plasma screen such as is usually used in discos. These special effects are transparent, nothing is mystified and yet a quite extraordinary atmosphere arises: somewhere between the sublime and the banal, between fiction and reality. ...
